1) Il nome "Alabama" sembra qui
essere usato sia come nome di persona che come nome dello Stato (come nel
caso del verso "forty-nine sister states all had Alabama in their eyes").
Questa è una reminescenza del verso del brano di Neil Young dal
titolo "Alabama" che recita: "You've got the rest of the Union to help
you along".

che mi segnala: credo che nel brano venga utilizzato il nome dello stato
dell'Alabama trattato come se fosse un poco di buono. Il riferimento al
"witness box", cioe' al bancone dei giurati, e ai 49 stati sorelle, mi
fa pensare che ci si riferisca all'Alabama come (storicamente) allo
stato piu' retrivo e razzista degli
Stati Uniti. Vedi in proprosito la canzone "Alabama" di Neil Young (credo
che sia su "Harvest")
2) Billy Bojangles: Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, 25 Maggio 1878 - 25 Novembre 1949. Attore afroamericano. Il verso che si riferisce a lui come "Majordomo Billy Bojangles" potrebbe alludere al ruolo che Robinson ha spesso interpretato, in particolare nei film di Shirley Temple.
3) Due riferimenti al 23mo salmo ed alla Valle dell'Ombra compaiono anche in Eagle Mall Suite sempre di Robert Hunter, nel brano "John Silver": "...through the Valley of the Shadow ran he"
